SPECIAL WORLDLY NEWS UPDATE
WHERE OH WHERE HAS MY HERBALIST GONE?
Bonjour my good Americans! We are here in Brussels, Belgium and enjoying it very much so far! I am working on my Masters Degree in Nutrition and Townsend is managing a new technology with his company, CTG.
From a nutritional standpoint, those Belgium Waffles are packed with sugar and butter! HOWEVER, they feel so warm in your hand as youre window shopping down the cobble stone streets in the 5 degree Celsius weather that its hard to resist! Oh, and they do brew a lot of beer here. Which of course is beneficial because of the hops they usehops are good for the central nervous system. Then of course coffee is (as Townsend says) an Event. The coffee is rich, and served on a silver platter with cream, sugar, a doily, and some type of cookie or Chocolate. Sometimes I am not sure if the cookie is meant to go with the coffee or if its for the little old ladys dog or cat sitting next to me!
At least you can get a terrific salad here! I havent seen any head lettuce (nutritionally void) as of yet. It is all the good spring lettuce and bitter leaves. Of course the salad is the only thing I have been eating the whole time.
WHERE HAS MY HERBALIST BEEN?
India was an experience, and Nepal was a kick, especially our elephant-back safari! As promised, I brought back some knowledge about the Aryuvedic Medicine. We met with two, very respectable, Aryuvedic Doctors, who both were also professors at the Indian Aryuvedic College. One of the Doctors was also an Author (we bought his book) and the other a Bio-Chemist. The Bio-Chemists father was an Aryuvedic Doctor and his Grandfather was the Doctor to the Maharaja of India! They spent time telling us about what they teach and practice. Aryuveda is actually the most ancient of the healing therapies, although in the U.S. we seem to accept the Chinese methods much more readily. These doctors believe (as I do) that all sickness is caused by a nutritional deficiency and/or a build up of toxins in the system. Therefore, the prerequisite to a nutritional and lifestyle change begins with something called Panche Karma. This is cleansing therapy as I will describe below:
First you are given some emetics which purge your gut and excess mucus from the lungs through vomiting.
You are then given laxative herbs to prep you for the enema room. Along with this you are "bled". The blood is where the last of the toxins exist. Talk about a purge!
After recovering from this, they feed you some "hot" herbs (like ginger or capsicum) and slap you in a wooden contraption with only your head sticking out. At this point you are steamed for an hour.
Scooping your sweaty body from the sauna, they lay you on a wooden table and perform an intense, deep tissue body massage
Scraping your flattened body from the table you are taken to another table where a swinging bucket of hot, herbal oil hangs over your forehead. The oil is dripped slowly onto your forehead for several hours. This is supposed to take away mental disorders, brain tumors, mental stress, and general brain malfunctions.
Now you are ready for your herbal program. Walla! Total health proceeds in approximately three months (or at the point of departing your body for heaven, whichever comes first)!
Well, any volunteers? Actually, this is really the way I try to take care of most of you, except in a somewhat gentler way. My massage table is soft and has blankets, and you get soft music and candles burning in the background. Well, maybe Ive just been too easy on some of you!? Hmmm .
VITAMIN C & LONGEVITY
As I continue on my Masters Degree in Nutrition, I am studying Longevity. Most of the work is by Linus Pauling, known for his research and findings on vitamins, especially Vitamin C. I have learned some new information from these studies that I would like to pass along.
OFF YOUR SUPPLEMENTS AND ON THE RE-BOUND
The first fact that I found interesting is the so called re-bound effect that your body can have when taking high doses of vitamins, particularly vitamin C. The studies find that when a high dose of vitamin C is stopped suddenly, the bodys immune system temporarily takes a dive, and the person becomes susceptible to disease.
Many of you may have experienced this first hand if you have ever stopped your program for some reason and gotten sick right away! I know I have made this mistake myself!
There are some ways to avoid this problem:
The most obvious is to not stop your intake of your supplements abruptly. Always make sure you have a supply of your vitamins/herbs in stock.
Importantly, if you are taking vitamin C or any other supplement therapeutically, make sure that you continue taking the supplement for several more days, after you feel completely well, and gradually decrease the dose. Therapeutically here means high doses for the prevention of a cold or for treatment of a specific ailment. This will insure that you not only will beat the flu or cold that you may have suffered, but following this method will not cause the re-bound effect as above. This is important, since at this point you are at one of your more vulnerable times, and you know .
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Timing is very important when fighting off a cold, flu or virus. Studies prove that the most effective time to begin taking therapeutic supplements is within the very first hour(s) that you feel any symptoms of an oncoming cold. Symptoms can include: headache, general malaise, indefinite feeling of uneasiness or discomfort, chills, stuffed up nose and/or a slight increase in body temperature.
Pauling stresses that if you are a candidate for catching a cold that you should immediately protect yourself with preventative doses of vitamin C. You are a candidate if you have been exposed to someone with a cold, have been exposed to environmental factors such as; irritating air substances, chilling of the body, wearing wet clothes, or wet shoes. Being fatigued and/or under stress also significantly enhances your candidate status.
Most of this information is about vitamin C which Pauling is most famous. However, this information has implications for many vitamins. Remember that your herbs are packed with vitamins and minerals from natural sourcesplants. I would apply the same information for the vitamin C as I would for your favorite herbs or vitamins that you use in fighting off a sickness. My favorite, as I suggested in my last newsletter is CCA Relief and Colloidal Silver. CCA Relief by the way is PACKED with vitamin C containing herbs. This is probably one of the reasons that it seems to be such a miracle product. For some, like me, vitamin C is too acidic. That is why I rely on herbs to get my Vitamin C intake. (See below for a list of Vitamin C sources.)
HOW MUCH CAN I "C"?
It has been found that when taking a daily supplement of vitamin C, the bodys immune system is strengthened. Although studies prove that even small amounts of supplemental vitamin C can keep you healthier than those with no extra supplementation, why settle for less than vibrant health? It also has been shown that taking enough of the vitamin C, can, has, and will stop a cold in its tracks. Fortunately Pauling recognizes (as I do) biochemical individuality--meaning that we are all made up chemically different, based on our particular eating habits, lifestyle, inherited strengths and weaknesses, etc.. Since doses of vitamin C taken to retain optimal results can vary wildly for each person (1,000mg18,000mg daily) the question must be addressed: how much is optimum for me?
There are two methods you can use:
1. Body weight: Grapine with Protectors (known for being even better than vitamin C as an antioxidant) is taken therapeutically as 15mg per pound of body weight. So if you are 135lbs, you would take nine pills per day. If you are using Vitamin C, you can take one gram per pound of body weight per day. Using 1,000mg (1g) tablets, for a 135lb person, this would equal about 13-14 pills per day!*
Secondly, and I believe most effectively, is to use Dr. Moertels method of bowel tolerance. With this method, one starts with a fairly high dosage of vitamin C (such as 5,000mg) per day. If you get diarrhea, lower the dosage daily by 1,000mg until you stop experiencing it. If no diarrhea occurs, you can then increase your dosage daily until you DO experience the diarrhea, then back off one. You will know this is the amount your body needs.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Vitamin C, and most herbs are non-toxic, therefore, you can take them until they work! This applies to your entire herbal program in general. If you are on a program for several months, and are not feeling better, or are continuing to get colds, either increase the dosages or add an immune boosting herb or vitamin C to it. These same rules apply for elimination. If you are not getting the results you expected or the results I told you-you could expect, up your dosages! Our bio-chemicals change quite frequently, and sometimes the doses will vary depending on state of health, stress, sickness, etc. at the time of your first eye reading or muscle testing session. Get familiar with what works for you. I will guide you as much as possible, but it is my greatest aspiration that you learn how to take care of your particular needs with natural therapy.
NOTE: If you are using therapeutic doses of Vitamin C along with your regular herbal/supplemental program, the same method applies, however, you will most likely need less of the Vitamin C. As mentioned previously, the rest of your herbal program is providing a good dose of vitamins already. Add a good diet to this program and your needs should also drop significantly. Always take with food.

NEW TESTIMONIAL!
Special mention needs to go to my client in Heber, UT whose doctor told her some months ago that he was concerned about her very low protein and iron levels. She had the check-up to assure her body was prepared for a healthy pregnancy. The doctor told her it would be dangerous for her to conceive with a low blood count and that the optimum growth for a baby could not take place without proper protein levels. Protein is the building block for tissue growth and repair. She came to me for her second program after this concern. I put her on Synerprotein, Super Algae,** PrimeForm Amino Acids, NSPs Prenatals,** along with some other herbs for her specific weaknesses.
Within four months, she had another check-up by her doctor. To her delight he reported that her iron and protein levels were up and in perfect balance! He noted that she increased her blood by about a pint!! She explained to him her program and he told her to keep doing what she was doing! I hope you can all find such caring Doctors that are willing to work with you and the natural things you are doing for your health. Now she is ready to conceive more than just a new program! Good job Lauri!
**NOTE: NSPs Super Algae, and Prenatal vitamins are good to take before during and after pregnancy, they are especially good for the breast feeding period to ensure your baby and yourself stays well nourished. Other pregnant clients of mine have used these very successfully.
