A 25 Year Old Company with humble "roots"
Nature’s Sunshine Products began in 1972 as a simple family project on a kitchen table. Gene and Kristine Hughes of Provo, Utah, heard from a friend that red cayenne pepper (Capsicum) taken as a food supplement would help to improve Gene’s nagging health problem. Gene acted on the suggestion and was pleased with the result, but as you can imagine, swallowing a spoonful of cayenne pepper was an unpleasant experience! That’s when they hit on the idea of putting the powder into a simple gelatin capsule.
The Hughes enlisted the help of other family members and began hand-capsulating various herb powders at their home for sale to local health food stores. Soon the products were being sold in neighboring states and people began to realize the benefits of building health with herbs. The rest, they say, is history!
In short, what once was considered old-fashioned and quirky has suddenly become mainstream. Nature’s Sunshine considers itself a pioneer in the natural health movement and believes that, as a result, it is well-positioned for continued success.

NSP begins by securing raw materials from the most reputable suppliers in the world. They run meticulous tests on each incoming shipment of materials to make certain that the herb powders and other raw ingredients are the finest they can be. Each sample is verified on the cellular level by microscopes and compared to previous samples—guarding against contamination from dirt, sand, and other foreign inorganic materials. Chemical testing with sophisticated liquid and gas chromatographs is performed to analyze samples for active ingredient and volatile oil profiles, and to test for pesticide residues.
