Volume 5 Issue 1 Spring 2000

Happy new millennium everyone! 1999 has sure been an interesting year to reflect on and it looks like 2000 will be just as grand! So let’s get right to business. I have loads news to share. Furthermore, this issue is dedicated to anxiety and depression, some causes of and some ways to help yourself naturally. So grab a cup of that chamomile tea and read on!

Depressed Over Anxiety?

Depression and anxiety are really two sides of the same problem. Typically, feelings of stress and anxiety come first. Anxiety is fear. Fear comes from the unknown, such as when we are getting ready to deal with any new situation, a new client, a new job, house, marriage, baby, writing another book, etc. The other major factor that causes anxiety are internal mental pressures created in our minds from our childhood, and from other influential people who shaped our thoughts on what and how we should be. These internal pressures can be easily aggravated by outside pressures such as school, work, problem relationships, and other normal pressures in our daily lives.

Those of us who want to succeed, be a good person or have an internal drive to be and do well at everything we do, tend to allow anxiety to get the best of us, pushing us to take on more than a reasonable amount of responsibility. Sometimes these pressures lead to anxiety or panic attacks.

Anxiety attacks may be experienced as somewhat mild in nature, such as digestive upset, trembling, sweating and a feeling of being "out of your body" or they can be full blown and incapacitating, leading some to work their way into agoraphobia (fear of being out public).

So how does depression fit into this scenario? Let’s take a look…

Physically, when you are stressed, your glandular system (particularly your adrenal glands) and your nervous system are working overtime. The body feels that there is something to fear, and reacts by pumping more blood to your muscles to help you run from danger, raising blood sugar temporarily, and increasing respiration rate. This all takes up a great deal of nutrients and energy.

Your adrenals and nervous system are like bank accounts. They have a certain amount of reserve. When you constantly withdraw without making extra nutritional and mental relaxation deposits, you can run yourself empty. This is exactly when depression sets in.

Once you’ve exhausted yourself, you go on a low, and become depressed. It is a vicious circle if you let it be.

Steady She Goes..

SOOO aren’t you glad you have me to tell you about some of the excellent and natural tools available to help you stop the cycle and build back up your body to keep you steady? Of course you are! Keep reading!

Your body’s natural reaction to stress is perfect if you truly COULD run from what makes you anxious. (Get out that Harley now!). But the true source of over anxiousness rests in your mind. When working with anxiety and depression, we need to work with the whole picture: body, mind and soul—i.e. your whole self. Here’s how:

 Body

Reflexology is an awesome therapy to calm the body, mind and sole(!). Reflexology helps you create the feel good hormone serotonin. Serotonin boosts feelings of self-esteem, aids restful sleep, prevents sugar cravings, and cravings for refined carbohydrates (breads, cookies, pasta), and helps prevent depression and worrying.

Reflexology can help you get a grip on your feelings. It can be a nice way to temporarily break the cycle of anxiety/depression while doing the rest of the things you need to do (supplementation and mental rest or counsel to heal permanently.)

Nutrition is imperative. Feed that nervous system and those glands with extra supplementation to build your reserves. Here are my favorite NSP choices:

Focus Attention: Contains l-glutamine which helps clear and calm the mind. L-glutamine deficiencies cause free-floating anxiety, fearfulness, insecurity, panic and restlessness or insomnia.

5HTP Power: Supports the nervous system and helps promote serotonin. It also contains B6 and zinc, both are normally deficient with mental illness, and beginning deficiency can cause anxiety and depression symptoms, as well as inability to remember dreams, unclear thinking, lowered immunity, and addictions to sugar, foods, alcohol and other substances. The suma, ashwaganda and Siberian ginseng in this combo help nourish the adrenal glands. (Do not take if you are on prescription medication).

NutriCalm: The all time favorite for supplementing with the B-Complex vitamins. The B’s put back into your system what stress, poor diet and alcohol take out. The other herbs in NutriCalm are known for their balancing effects on the nerves.

Watch Your Foods

Eliminate: coffee, colas, sugar, sugar substitutes, processed foods

Replace with: Herbal beverage (herbal coffee replacement), organic juices and pure water, Stevia or honey, whole, unprocessed fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds

Don’t Forget the Oil

Essential oils (aromatherapy) make wonderful remedies. Rub them on your temples, or put on a cotton ball and inhale. Order NSP’s Essential Oil brochure for a list of ways to use aromatherapy.

For calming effects try the following:

For uplifting and focusing try:

No Mind No Matter

It does no good to take some time away from a fast paced life if you continue working or obsessing about your "to do" list in your mind.

Do whatever it takes to get your mental chatter box EMPTY! If you can take some time off, do it—and write or talk until you have dumped the excess. Sometimes this type of processing works effectively, as long as you are not just re-hashing problems or resentments that you deny taking responsibility for or cannot change. Figure out a way to deal with them while you’re talking and writing. Things that you can take control of make you feel powerful, and not a victim of these flailing thoughts that create anxiousness.

When you quiet the incessant internal chatter and listen to what your own mind is telling you—you will be able to get an intellectual handle on what is making you so anxious. Then you’ll be more empowered to help yourself.

For some, yoga or quiet meditation or even a walk in nature helps to quiet the mind. Think of all the wonderful, beautiful mysteries of nature that you are missing by repeatedly playing your internal mental tapes that insist they know how you need to be and do! Look at those stars up in the sky on a clear night and think about how massive the Universe is. Your life is part of the Divine plan, so get on with it—see the big picture in life. The irritations you are dealing with are just little lessons on a MUCH larger road!

Counsel

And if you find you have unresolved past things (that word issue is getting overused) to deal with, consider seeking a competent counselor who can help facilitate a positive release of old, pent up emotions that are driving you on a path you don’t want to be on! If you truly want to be better and get out of your downward spiral, you need an objective view. If you refuse help you cannot heal, and therefore you cannot personally grow. There is nothing to be ashamed of—you should be proud of yourself for admitting your weaknesses and getting help with ways to strengthen them. A psychologist/counselor can be your mental nourishment you need to become whole. It takes courage, and courage is healing in itself.

Soul

Prayer is one of my favorite tools I use to feel connected to God and to get help. Prayers are always answered--in one way or another. So be clear about what you ask for. Ask to be shown the way, or pray for help in a good way. You have to be willing to look at the answer to your prayers when it comes. If not, your prayer might show up as a dramatic event or trauma. Believe it or not, this is still an answer. For instance, someone I know was praying out loud in his daily life. He kept saying out loud, "I’m so burnt out, I need a change!" Within two weeks of his "consistent praying" his house burnt down. Wow, talk about a change! He got it! There were some opportunities for positive change that presented themselves to him before this tragedy, but he was too caught up in complaining (another type of prayer) to take advantage of these subtle answers, and was finally FORCED into change by losing his home. The good news was that the "tragedy" showed him how ungrateful he had been and he has a whole new, humbled attitude, which helped him grow, and improved his quality of life. Just seeing the opportunity in any "bad" thing that happens in your life fosters personal growth. So, to avoid getting your prayers answered in a BIG way, become more conscious of the little hints that can guide you in a more gentle manner, and be careful what and how you wish, pray or complain about!

Overall, a mix of nutrition to build your reserves, reflexology, (or your favorite relaxing body work) to break the cycle, mental time out and a counselor if you need one and self awareness mixed with prayer, is the best recipe I know for whole healing, not just anxiety and depression, but for everything associated with it.

Frankie’s Vegetarian Book--due Fall 2000

So, now you’ve been rubbing your feet and taking your herbs, what else could you possibly need? How about eating better with less meat? My newest book The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Being Vegetarian, Second Edition is due for publishing in September 2000. It is not written so much for the vegetarian, but more for the meat eater who wants to eat less meat, but who doesn’t really know what to eat instead. I include many delicious ideas for meatless meals and all the health, ethical, spiritual and environmental reasons why people go and then STAY vegetarian! It’s fun and informative, and will walk you through the process of eating less meat, to how to go vegan (no animal products at all) if you want. And best of all, it helps you eat better, be more nourished and gives you all the information you need to go meatless.

Attention employees, your employer may offer alternative health benefits as a supplemental program to your normal insurance, including discounted costs for reflexology, and nutritional counseling (iridology readings) through chosen alternative health providers. Check with your employer to see if they have any of these programs in place:

American Specialty Health Networks

Holistic Health Care Network

Alternative Health Network

If so, that’s good news for you since I am listed as one of their official providers! As a card-carrying member, my services are discounted to you!

SPA?

The Healing Feats Spa is no more. Instead, it is going to be the Healing Feats Holistic Health Center. The word spa gives the impression that it is a place to come and luxuriate and be pampered. While you will be able to get the fluffy, warm, pampering treatments such as body wraps, tanning, reflexology, massage and maybe even a manicure, the main goal of the H.F.H.H.C. will be to EMPOWER you to take responsibility for your continued health and well being.

It will be a place to come when you are ready to get on (or back on) a better, healthier life path. H.F.H.H.C. will be a place that serves as a catalyst to your healing. You can detoxify via body wraps, colonics and steaming. This will help speed your nutritional and herbal supplementation programs (created with the help of iridology and muscle testing). And support your positive changes by helping you to rid your tissues from built up toxins.

I want you to see this center as a support system for your continued growth and ongoing rise to health, not just somewhere the "girls" can go for a day to be pampered. Not that I’m against the pampering issue, (I love that too!). but the H.F.H.H.C. will be filled with healers who are passionate about getting you on the right road to permanent health, the natural way, and we’ll need your participation in that process.
